WHATS IN OUR FRIDGE???

I’ve been a little MIA since returning from holidays because my welcome home gift was a great big cold! (I blame a lapse in judgment going to a very large big box store in Kelowna before picking Nigel up from the airport last week). I’ve been pretty useless all week and Nigel has been a gem. Today I decided that a cold should only last five days and it’s officially soup season (you’re probably all well ahead of me) so I made a “what’s in our fridge” soup and I’m pretty pleased with the results.

In no particular order let me present Tomato (frozen from several seasons ago…) Onion, Garlic, Carrot & Yam Cream Soup. Secret ingredients include Stoke the Fire Black Garlic Honey and the last tablespoon of Stoke’s Sugar Rush Peach. I also added a liberal spoonful of Thai Red Curry Paste because why not! My lemon thyme and oregano from the garden are still going strong so a big handful of them, salt and pepper rounded things out. Enough flavour that even my cold infused head was able to taste all the goodness.

I’ll never be able to replicate it but that’s have the fun!

Our Campbell River office (aka @rmccormick2012 ) took home some of Hanoi 36 Pho Bone Broth on his last visit to the SHU and reported in tonight that the broth is delicious!

Riley spent almost a month in Vietnam last year and his comment it tastes just like Hanoi is high praise indeed. A cook from scratch kind of guy he added his own protein and it looks so good!

ADVENTURES OF NIGEL …
…in which he eats ALL THE CHEESE!

We discovered Pick & Cheese at Seven Dials (one of my fav spots) on a previous trip to London and sadly we were not hungry at the time. Nigel rectified that by propping up their awesome bar enjoying a port and cheese filled lunch while sending me photos of his choices!

Pick & Cheese is the masterful creation of The Cheese Bar Co. (That started out as a cheese food truck no less!!!) dedicated to championing British cheese. Pick & Cheese serves up delicious options on the world’s 1st cheese & wine conveyor belt restaurant. OK maybe Nigel didn’t eat all the cheese but I’m sure he had fun picking from the rotating options and the multi page menu. Here are is his awesome selections:

* Pevensey blue paired with pickled grapes
* La Latteria Mozzarella paired with sage and hazelnut pesto
* Cenarth Brie paired with tomato & chilli jam
* A tawny port & endless crackers (I can just imagine how many …)

And this was just lunch! A special dinner coming up with Harrison and Rebecca tonight!

THANKFUL …

This Thanksgiving was different and so special. Nigel is spending it with his son in Lisbon and London - two of his favourite places. I spent it with my son Riley in our favourite place - the Shuswap.

Our epic rack of lamb for two Thanksgiving dinner was too good to not find a place on the grid so here you go!

Thankful for:

🙏 Spending simple quality time together, cooking, laughing and continually learning about life and each other

So Nigel went east and I went west after our epic road trip. He met up with his son in Lisbon for an extra fun long weekend. Of course they had to have the traditional Pasteis de Nata and watched staff make the delicious tart at Manteigaria a well known but less touristy location!

Happy to see he’s repping the Shuswap Brewers Festival proud!

Having a hard time writing a caption for last night. You may not know this about me, but I have a thing about the sky. I wake up in the middle of the night to look for the moon. I’m always chasing sunrises and sunsets. But I’ve never been able to see the northern lights and it’s definitely been a bucket list item. Saving this to the grid and so grateful for mother nature in the world that we live in. The first photo in the reel is one that is extremely personal to me and the last one is the view from our bed after I just needed to go to sleep, but could still see the lights. #Aurora #NorthernLights #Shuswap #BritishColumbia

ACCORDING TO BON APPETIT and …

The New York Times as well as our own host Prentiss House, Dear Annie was the place to enjoy one of our last New England Road Trip meals. Positioned as a neighbourhood wine bar sounded right up our alley and who are we to argue so we ventured in.

The space is full of plants and a pretty chill atmosphere contrasting with the chatter of happy guests.

This place was made for Nigel because it positions itself as a pescatarian eatery. He could choose anything or everything on the menu!

The extensive wine selection was impressive too and we chose a French Chenin blend and a lovely Italian red from Piedmont.

We sat at the communal table and enjoyed …

👍 Raw + Briny ~ scallop crudo with watermelon leche de Tigre, salad matcha and , dried calamari in cilantro & shallot oil

👍Catch of the Day - poached Atlantic Cod, Rouille , pickles, mixed herbs with sourdough.

Everything was cooked to perfection and a great way to wind up our trip. I guess Bon Apetit and the New York Times know what they are talking about.

SIMPLE PLEASURES …

Other than fall foliage and covered bridges we really didn’t know what to expect from New Hampshire and we were delighted to find an abundance of apple farms!

We visited Carter Hill Orchard and it was a perfect day for it. So many families out enjoying the property, picking apples, playing on the farm equipment and of course enjoying their products! A summer hailstorm created some blemishes they were offering for u-pick but that did not affect their taste!! Soooo good and at 5 dollars for 1/2 peck…(we learned that was about 10 apples) a bargain!!

Now for the best part! We had heard there is a competition for the best apple cider donuts and of course we had to try some. Carter makes theirs fresh everyday and we were lucky to get ours warm! A hard decision to each buy just one or get the pack of six (not) these donuts won the prize for us! And the pack was only 5 dollars (seeing a theme here …)

A wonderful way to spend a Sunday roaming the absolutely gorgeous New Hampshire countryside.

THIS TRIP HAS …

…been full of delightful surprises and we had another today.

In the tiny village of Memramcook New Brunswick we searched for a place to enjoy our picnic lunch. Feeling somewhat defeated at the lack of public parks, we were close to setting up in the car on the roadside when we came across the Crow & Vine Vineyard.

We could not have been luckier to find this lovely cottage winery and tasting room recently purchased by South African brothers who prior, were living and working in Ladysmith on Vancouver Island!

We were hosted by the lively Beninda - the brother’s mom who shared the story of a family dream. Only six months in, they have artfully married their past with their future as evident in the tasting room is an especially wonderful stunning Nelson Mandela canvas. How they got it to the winery is a story you must ask when you visit!

We enjoyed a sparkling and a red that drank well with our picnic and is a sign of the potential of this six acre vineyard set on the banks of the Petitcodiac River.

They are harvesting those juicy grapes this Saturday and volunteers will be treated to a typical South African feast. Oh how I wish we could stay.

It’s a lovely spot and as Beninda put it so perfectly,
“the soil is so fertile you can plant a toothpick and tomorrow you’ll have a telephone pole …”

We wish Eugene and Christo and their family the very best and look forward to following their success!

Our trip to India this spring delivered more than wonderful memories - we made new friends and today we found a new happy place!

We visited Rozina & her husband Peter, owners of North Brewing Company for lunch, flights and a behind the scenes peak at their facility. Rozina was one of our merry band of 15 who ate and drank our way around India this past spring and when it was time to say goodbye, we promised her we would come visit - and we did just that!

North Brewing Company has a wonderful funky relaxed vibe that just makes you want to hang out all afternoon … and we pretty much did! Bringing community back to neighbourhoods, Rozina and Peter have created a special place, not just full of really good beer and food but full of fun too! I love that their menu nods to Rosina’s roots with ethnic flavours enhancing old favourites and their beverages reflect local icons like best seller Lawrencetown Surf Session.

Thank you Rozina and Peter for being such delightful hosts and sharing your passion with us!

A DAY TO REFLECT…

Spending National Truth and Reconciliation in Nova Scotia gives us different way to reflect.

Yesterday I chose to purchase a rosé collaboration between Benjamin Bridge and the Gloopsap Nation. Appreciate their efforts to work together for a better future and will take today to reflect on the children who never returned home and the residential school survivors.

On the bottle …
“Since time immemorial, the Mi’kmag have lived in balance and harmony within the unique ecosystem where these vineyards are now planted.

This wine embodies the friendship and allyship between Benjamin Bridge and Glooscap First Nation, and is a reflection of our mutual desire for a future in the image ol this holistic definition of sustanability.

Nigel hear’s this regularly as I’m photo mad on this trip but this time was for a special reason. In the middle of pretty much nowhere on the road crossing Nova Scotia from Mahone Bay to Wolfville we came across the CUTEST farmstand.

Turns out we were super lucky as it was Angela’s last day (closing early this year for a family wedding :).

The Blue Bike Farm was still full of so many nice things from home baking (we got the most delicious biscotti and squares), to preserves and syrups including a chia syrup I was so wishing I could bring home but carry on luggage doesn’t allow for. Fresh eggs, flowers, and beautiful wooden crafts (I did buy a cute wooden spoon!).

Every time I find a special farmstand like the Blue Bike Farm I think about the potential of our Shuswap Farm Trail. Local farmers if you are looking for inspiration - check out the Blue Bike Farm - she’s done a fantastic job! She even takes e-transfer!

WE WERE HUNGRY …

and the Hungry Traveler was the perfect solution.

Set half way between Mahone Bay and Lunenburg on the Bay to Bay Trail (awesome marketing concept we are bringing back to the Shuswap!), this cute café offers breakfast, lunch and sweets with some really great vegetarian and vegan options.

Nigel’s Autumn Chickpea Smash was the star of our lunch (until dessert of course ..) - chickpeas smashed with celery, apple, green onion, sunflower seeds with dijon and sage dressing on homemade Oatmeal Brown Bread.

I had an equally delicious half roasted chicken with onion jam, goat cheese, greens and cranberry mayo with the softest yummy focaccia.

We couldn’t resist the desert selection and decided to honour the west coast by having one of the signature desserts, the Peanut Butter Nanaimo Bar! The double chocolate cookie was also delicious but the Nanaimo bar was next level!

This adorable comfortable space is a Halal Cafe which offers tons of flavour and home made options. It’s the perfect stop on the trail or just stop by car like we did!

Nigel’s Autumn Chickpea Smash was the star of our lunch (until dessert of course ..) - chickpeas smashed with celery, apple, green onion, sunflower seeds with dijon and sage dressing on homemade Oatmeal Brown Bread.

I had an equally delicious half roasted chicken with onion jam, goat cheese, greens and cranberry mayo with the softest yummy focaccia.

We couldn’t resist the desert selection and decided to honour the west coast by having one of the signature desserts, the Peanut Butter Nanaimo Bar! The double chocolate cookie was also delicious but the Nanaimo bar was next level!

This adorable comfortable space is a Halal Cafe which offers tons of flavour and home made options. It’s the perfect stop on the trail or just stop by car like we did!

In Southwest Harbor there is an amazing Café that is open Sunday to Thursday and closes Fridays and Saturdays! Can you guess why?

To quote one of the co-owners “my wife is insane”, Clark Point Catering had a terrifically successful catering business but when a storefront came available they jumped at the chance to add a cafe to their service. Working with partners Jeannie & chef Brenton Anderson, chef Huyen Tran and her husband serve up the most amazing selection of fresh food featuring local ingredients.

The place is POPULAR! We went twice and both times had to wait patiently for a seat but totally worth waiting for. Our first visit was to enjoy pastry and coffee, the 2nd to have a proper breakfast in anticipation of “ferry food” later today. IYKYK … our tartines were out of this world delicious.

So the reason they are closed Fridays and Saturdays is because the catering business is so strong they need all hands on deck and, they feel there are other options for their customers two days a week. We are soooo glad we were here Wednesday/Thursday!

Southwest Harbor is a small quaint community on Desert Island and part of the crazy busy Acadia National Park. We chose to stay here instead of Bar Harbor and really enjoyed our time here.

A great hike up Mount Battie overlooking Camden got us in the mood for something healthy and @mixedgreenscamden was the perfect solution. The service and the fresh bright food reminded us of our girls back home at @thenomshuswap. They even had a turkey meatball bowl with the best ever pickled carrots.

Another cool idea (we are collecting them) is a promotion called Camden Famous which highlights businesses who are a cut above. They even have a coffee table book and a podcast! Can you see this in the Shuswap?

We have only 2 more days in Maine then off to Nova Scotia. So far we have loved our time in “Vacationland”

NEW ENGLAND COASTAL TOWNS …

Captured our hearts. Salem was a bust - rain plus soooo many people (its witching season) and way too many bad shops so we headed north and found two beautiful coastal towns.

Portsmouth was charming and our first taste of gorgeous New England architecture.

Ogunquit was even more charming especially Perkins Cove and the Marginal Way Trail gave us a chance to stretch our legs and find a cute lighthouse.

Tomorrow Lobster and more colourful floats!

THEY CALL IT BEANTOWN BUT …

I think it could be called bronze town. Overflowing with American history (and a little British too), Boston’s statues commemorate everything from the American Revolution, the Tea Party and the Boston Massacre to Bobby Orr and Robert Kennedy. We also found the Democrat donkey and in beautiful Beacon Hill, stunning bronze and brass door knockers!

Our very favourite though was The Embrace located in Boston Common. Commissioned in 2022 it reflects the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King who met in Boston in 1952.The Embrace is a memorial to their love and leadership inspired by a photograph of the Kings embracing. It is also meant to reflect the power of collective action, the role of women in the freedom movement, and the forging of solidarity out of mutual empathy and vulnerability.

Boston is a foot friendly city and we put in over 16000 steps walking the Freedom Trail and other sights including many many tour guides, one of whom really took his role seriously.

On the Shuswap Farmstand Trail! It was a beautiful sunny morning as we drove one of our favourite routes south. Yankee Flats Road is full of wonderful farms and the foundation of the Shuswap Farmstand Trail. Today we came across a fully stocked pumpkin stand at Shuswap Highland Ranch supervised by the cutest Highland cooos! Take a drive and get yourself one!

Shuswap Highland Ranch is a first-generation family farm owned by Shawn and Eden Murray,subscribe to back to roots farming and are inaugural members of the Trail.

Find fresh fruit, veggies, eggs, honey, flowers and pasture raised cuts. Watch for the Shuswap Farmstand Trail signs throughout the Shuswap.

TAKE US BACK …

Remember when we spent 5 days in Tokyo last spring? Well we loved all the food and FINALLY … right here in the Shuswap we got to enjoy Lumby based Kamui Japanese Curry food truck and all the flavours landed right back on our tastebuds!

I was delighted when Claudia – owner, operator, and certified soba chef of Kamui agreed to be one of our food trucks at the Shuswap Brewers Festival.

One of the reasons we love her food is that vegetarian Nigel was not relegated to the “I’ll just have the fries” which sometimes happens. He loved her vegetable curry and by the looks of Ange’s pic (borrowed for this reel) she did too!

Claudia may be inspired from her time living in Japan but she subscribes to our favourite mantra - made by hand with local ingredients. She makes her own hand-made spice blends and uses the freshest local produce and meat from nearby farms. Bonus - her dishes are gluten free!

I was lucky enough to get the last Katsu Curry of the night and it was delicious. The chickens was out of this world full of flavour and tender.

Claudia and her team were full of smiles and we are so glad they were part of Shuswap Brewers Festival. We hope they come back again next year!

SWIM . BIKE . RUN …

Nigel has been doing triathlons for years so when the 55+Games came to the Shuswap this week it was an opportunity to do the thing he loves.

Held in Sicamous, the volunteers were awesome and the course was in fine shape. The water was warmish and a sprinkle before did not dampen the pavement which was welcome for the riders.

The 55+ Games Triathlon was a sprint distance 750m swim, 20k bike and a 5k run. Everyone including Nigel was all smiles as they came through the finish line. 33 Athletes from all over the province and various age groups both men and women competed.
